Klatskin tumor, also known as hilar cholangiocarcinoma, is a rare but serious type of cancer that occurs in the bile ducts. This tumor forms in the upper part of the bile ducts within the liver, at the junction of the right and left hepatic ducts. It can obstruct bile flow, leading to serious health problems.

Symptoms of a Klatskin tumor are often not noticeable in the early stages. However, as the tumor progresses, the following symptoms may be observed:

  • Jaundice (Yellowing of the Skin and Whites of the Eyes): Bilirubin accumulates due to obstruction of bile flow.

  • Dark urine and light colored stool: Caused by impaired bilirubin metabolism.

  • Itching: It occurs as a result of the accumulation of toxic substances in the body.

  • Abdominal Pain: Felt in the liver area.

  • Weight Loss and Loss of Appetite: Generally seen in later stages.

Klatskin Tumor Diagnosis

A number of tests and imaging modalities are used to diagnose a Klatskin tumor:

  • Blood Tests: These are done to measure liver function and bilirubin levels.

  • Imaging Techniques: Bile ducts are examined in detail using methods such as ultrasound, MR cholangiography (MRCP) and computed tomography (CT).

  • Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP): Used to examine the bile ducts and take biopsies.

  • Biopsy: This is done to determine whether the tumor is cancerous or not.

Klatskin Tumor Treatment Methods

Treatment for Klatskin tumors varies depending on the tumor's stage, size, and the patient's overall health. The main treatment methods include:

  • Surgery: Surgical removal of the tumor is an effective treatment option in the early stages.

  • Radiotherapy: Used to reduce the size of the tumor or relieve symptoms.

  • Chemotherapy: It is preferred in cases that are not suitable for surgery or to prevent metastasis.

  • Endoscopic Stent Placement: Used to regulate bile flow and reduce jaundice.

Living with Klatskin Tumor

Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment approaches play a critical role in the treatment of Klatskin tumors. Seeing a doctor immediately upon noticing symptoms can be lifesaving. Routine checkups and steps to maintain liver health are important to reduce risks.
